This is not just a tasting tour.
It’s also an information packed tour of the small and fascinating site of Bologna’s oldest food market. It dates back to the year 1000 and only at this market is it possible to visit three historic shops.
Think of it as a private food history tour conceived for food lovers. If you’re interested in gaining insights into some of the gastronomic and social history behind Bologna’s famous foods, this is the tour for you. And you get plenty of tastings of too, fear not, at some of Bologna’s top family-run stores where local gastronomes shop, no chains or tourist traps.
As we tour the market I answer questions and provide a local’s perspective on selecting the finest ingredients, some of them, like Salame Rosa and Pignoletto wine, unique to this city. Among the speciality shops there’s a chocolate lovers’ paradise for exquisite hand-made chocolates, Bologna’s oldest bakery, a specialist upmarket grocery, the oldest, very tiny, coffee and wine bar in the market area, a 300 year old knife sharpener’s that has changed in fun ways over the centuries, as well as Bologna’s two top “Salumerie”.
The tour usually ends at an award winning wine shop-cum-wine bar that is a true Bologna institution. Here you enjoy a light lunch of pasta and/or a platter of cold cuts accompanied by local breads and a glass of good local wine.
The tour is for at least 2 people up to a maximum of 6. It starts at 9.30 am and ends about 1.30 pm.
